Elangovan was the joint secretary of Kongunadu Arts and Science College in Coimbatore and a resident of Kumaraswamy Goundampalayam in Erode. He had graduated from SJCE, Mysore. He had a farmhouse where he would visit during weekends and holidays. The police revealed that all the six accused were well acquainted with him over the last three months and they often used to travel with Elangovan to the farmhouse and nearby places on pleasure trips.
"They used to meet at a tea stall near Elangovan's farmhouse and go from there to the farmhouse or for movies and other short outings. They were thick friends. We suspect there was a misunderstanding between them which led to the murder," said K Gunasekaran, deputy superintendent of police, Perundurai Sub Division, Erode.
The arrested were identified as Lokesh,19, Robinson, 21, Shankar,19, Prasanna,18, Mohammed Tariq, 20, and Periyasamy,21.
