750 VIPs and MPs own guns at discounted rate
Right to information Act showed that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and former head of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi, former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, former Chief Election Commissioner and former minister of Sports are owning guns for their safety.
In 1989, congress leader Jagdish Tytler bought a o.32 Browning Pistol at Rs. 19,000 whose market value is Rs,1,60,000, whereas BJP compatriot Vijay Kumar Malhotra bought a .22 P Benetla Pistol in the year 1990 at Rs. 3,500 whose international price is $400.
The RTI information revealed that in 1991 UP's Chief Minister Mayawati paid Rs.4,900 for an Arminius revolver while the current chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chauhan also bought the same gun at the same price in the year 1993, whereas the actual market value of such revolvers is around Rs. 1.25 to 1.75 lakh.
The discounted weapons provided by government should come to an end.
Gopal Prasad, an activist has been quoted as saying,"This policy (of proving weapons at discounted rates) is unfair. These should be first given to security forces, why should they be given to MPs."
Despite crores of rupees spent on the security of our MPs, these MPs have taken up the security issues into thier own hands.
