New Delhi, Sep 14: Sports Minister Ajay Maken on Wednesday, Sep 14 announced Rs 1.5 lakh reward for each Hockey players who won the Asian Champions Trophy in China.

Maken, while announcing reward for the players, informed that Indian government has special scheme to provide cash money prize to sports persons. The Hockey players have been given Rs 1.5 lakh money under the same special scheme.

Maken also informed that many sports persons have been provided Rs 75 lakh in 2011 and Rs 48.1 crore was given to several others in last three years over different schemes.

Maken's announcement came over a controversy when Hockey players on Tuesday refused to accept the "too little" prize money - Rs 25,000.

During their facilitation in Delhi, the players refused the prize money offered by Hockey India claiming that the incentive is "too little to fetch even a decent playing kit".

Earlier, Maken, making himself aloof from the controversy, had tweeted, "Rd 25000 cash award was not announced by Govt but by the Hockey India. Govt. spends all the money on training, coaching & foreign exposure."

However, Punjab government also announced Rs 25 lakh to Hockey team and slammed Indian government and sports ministry for showing different attitude towards Cricket players and other sports persons of the country.
