Chennai, Aug 19: M Karunanidhi, DMK supremo's dream project at Chennai, the new secretariat complex which was built at a cost of Rs 1200 crore will soon be turned into a hospital by Jayalalithaa, Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu.

The announcement was made by the CM in a state assembly on friday, Aug 19 (today). The new secretariat complex was already laden with controversy, since Jayalalithaa came to power, she announced that her government would function from Fort Saint George which used to be DMK's headquarters previously.

The building was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh in presence of Sonia Gandhi on Mar 13, 2010 during the DMK regime. Even before construction of the building was over, Karunanidhi appoinetd Thotta Tharini, a art director to build a filmy set to win over Prime Minister's trust that all was ok with the construction.

The step was heavily criticised by Jayalalithaa that a huge amount was being spent on the structure despite the state witnessing a financial crunch.

After she came to power, the AIADMK supremo decided to turn the complex into a hi tech hospital after consulting doctors.

“The new super specialty hospital will be the largest of its kind in this part of the country," said a AIADMK source adding that the hospital could be named MGR Super Specialty Hospital and Medical College.

There are reports that the Jayalalithaa government has also set up an enquiry commission to probe of any financial irregularities in the building of new secretariat.
