Chennai, Aug 15: During her first Independence Day address after asserting power in 2011 Assembly polls, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa attacked former Karunindhi-led DMK government. She said that people of Tamil Nadu won a new freedom with the end of "tyrannical family rule."

"People started feeling that with AIADMK coming to power, the five years of tyrannical family rule has ended," Jayalalithaa said.

She added that during DMK government's regime, people were living in fear and people lacked freedom in all fields. She alleged that during the five years of DMK rule, Tamil Nadu changed to a state of lawlessness.

During her Independence Day speech after hoisting the national flag at Fort St George in Chennai, Jayalalithaa justified AIADMK government's decision to distribute freebies to public. She termed it as a measure to safeguard the interests of the poor people.

"In order to fulfill the essential needs of the people, our government is distributing some items free of cost. Such things distributed at no cost to the public should not be termed as freebies," Jayalalithaa said.

"It is the duty of the welfare state to safeguard the interest of the poor people by distributing things at no cost. Hence, on the day I took charge (on May 17), I ordered to give rice under the Public Distribution System at no cost," she added.
