Suresh Kalmadi was nominated by the NDA govt: Ajay Maken

New Delhi, Aug 2: Coming to the rescue of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sports Minister Ajay Maken has said that nomination of Suresh Kalmadi as the Commonwealth Games chairman was done under the NDA regime.

He also held former sports minister Vikram Verma responsible for signing the contract between India and the CWG Federation in India as a country.

The sports minister in his statement in the parliament has said that the CWG bid document was submitted on May 14, 2003 and that the original bid had provided for the government appointee as the OC Chief.

CNN-IBN quoted Maken as saying, "The NDA sports minister at that time will also have to answer a lot of questions. We are not passing the buck. The NDA has a lot many questions to answer. The host city contract was signed and passed by them."

It can be recalled that earlier NDTV had cited sources in the Prime Minister's Office as saying that they had no role in the decision to appoint Kalmadi as the Chief of the CWG Organising Committee.

Meanwhile, BJP rushed to defend themselves by saying that Vikram Verma had informed the NDA government that Suresh Kalmadi was to be made the Vice-chairman of the committee and not the Chairman.

It can be recalled that the Comptoller and Auditor General's report on the CWG Scam blamed the Prime Minister's Office for the appointment of Kalmadi as the CWG chief.
