Chennai, Aug 2: Expressing solidarity with the plight of Sri Lankan refugees who have made Tamil Nadu their home over the increasing cases of atrocities that has surfaced there, the Chief Minister of the state J Jayalalithaa has announced a monthly dole of Rs 1000 to 5,544 Lankan Tamils who are living in the state. The order was issued through an official press release by Jayalalithaa here today.

The press release stated, "The Chief Minister is concerned about the welfare of the Sri Lankan Tamils staying in refugee camps in the state and, therefore, in the Governor's address had also announced that various welfare measures will be extended to the Tamils."

Jayalalithaa had also broached the subject when the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Tamil Nadu last month on an official trip. A bold voice for the oppression faced by Tamil refugees, the AIADMK had adopted resolution seeking a curb in economic sanctions on Sri Lanka after they refused to act on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

This move comes in close heels of an embarrassment caused by AIADMK MP's in the Lok Sabha when they insulted a visiting Lankan Parliamentary delegation led by Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.

In the forefront of the agitation was M. Thambidurai who along with other AIADMK members raised slogans in the Lok Sabha as the speaker Meira Kumar welcomed the visiting delegation led by the Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker.
