TN: 4-year-old gets stuck in lift, dies

Coimbatore, Aug 1: A four-year-old girl died after she was stuck between the sliding inner doors and the hydraulic outer doors of a lift in Coimbatore on Jul 30.

The tragedy took place after Chavi Nahar (victim) was playing outside her apartment with her elder sister Kashish. After the victim got trapped in the elevator, her sister ran inside the house crying for help.

As elders were trying to pull her out, someone pressed the lift button and the lift moved upwards before it got struck, smashing the girl. The girl was pulled out successfully later but died on her way to the hospital.

According to the police statement, nobody heard the girl's cry but could see her through the glass panel on the outdoor. Neighbours also tried to tear down the door. Deepak Nahar, a student, also tried to help the girl by breaking open the door and pull her out.

"I tried to pull her out as I could see her in a diagonal position crammed between the doors when I got injured. I was bleeding profusely," said Deepak Nahar.

The girl was then rushed to a private hospital, where she was declared dead by doctors.

The deceased Chavi is a Lower KG (LKG) student and her sister, a class three student. Her father Lokesh Kumar Naha is a businessman by profession, while her mother, Savita Nahar is a housewife.

"The girl might have died of shock after she got trapped. Unfortunately somebody pressed the elevator button and it moved slightly up cramping her further," said C Raja, assistant commissioner of police.
