F1: Lewis Hamilton defies odds to win German Grand Prix

By Biswajeet Panda
Nuerburgring, Jul 25: Britain's Lewis Hamilton, warded of challenges from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber of Red Bull to win the Formula One German Grand Prix. This is his second victory of the 2011 season.

A visibly excited Hamilton, in the post-match conference said, "It was one of the best races I think I've ever done. This is a massive step forward ... and I hope we can keep the momentum going."

The eventual podium finishers were within 3 seconds of each other for most part of the 60-lap race, and each of them took turns to be in the lead because of the three pits stops made by all of the top drivers.

Lap 33 saw the most exciting lead change when Fernando Alonso came back to the track in front after a change of tyre, but was overtaken by Hamilton just a few metres after the pit lane exit.

Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, who leads the championship with 216 points finished fourth. This is the first time in the 2011 season that he hasn't had a podium finish.

Before the championship resumes weekend at the Hungaroring in Hungary, Vettel leads the pack with 216 points, followed by Webber with 139 and Hamilton on 134. Alonso is fourth with 130.
