Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi was sacked on Jul 24 as Vice Chancellor (VC) of Darul Uloom Deoband University.
Tremendous pressure was created on the Maulana to step down from his post. Though Vastanvi earlier had promised to quit in Feb 2011, later he retracted from his decision and continued in his position in the University.
He was earlier warned of resigning as the VC of Deoband University by the 18-member governing council and finally the council removed him on Sunday. The university is located in Deoband town of Sharanpur District in Uttar Pradesh.
The controversy and ruckus over Vastanvi were surfaced when he praised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for all developments of the state during his (Modi's) reign.
Vastanvi, who hails from Surat in Gujarat and was elected VC on Jan 10, faced protests from students at the seminary after he had said that Muslims should forget the communal programme of 2002 (Godhra riot) and move on and that their community did not face discrimination in Modi's state. However, the Maulana later said that he did not give a "clean chit" to Modi.
