Ramesh tried to make a successful attempt to kill his wife to get rid of her, but fortunately Kanchan, 34, defied death. According to police, Ramesh, a resident of Shahwadi in Vatva, got married to Kanchan 15 years back. It was an arranged marriage. The couple has three daughters and a son. After a decade of marriage, the cracks started appearing in the relationship and Kanchan suspected Ramesh of having an extra-marital affair. The couple often fought over this and Kanchan even went to stay with her parents earlier this year.
"Ramesh however convinced her to come back. She says that he was behaving well with her initially. On Monday, she asked him to accompany her to Gulf of Khambhat for a religious visit. Ramesh took her to Bavalia on the pretext of taking rest for a while in the evening. While they were standing on the bridge on a river, he pushed her off the bridge," said a Maninagar police station official.
Thinking her to be dead, as Kanchan did not know swimming, he returned home and churned out a fake story around her death, saying that she accidentally had slipped and fell into the river. When she came back a day after the incident, he was shocked and also tried to escape. But Kanchan got hold of him and called the police. Kanchan registered her complaint with Maninagar police station.
"She was quite fortunate. Some residents of Bavalia in Bhavnagar district saved her in the nick of time. She came back to tell her horrifying tale. She has accused her husband of attempt to murder. Ramesh has been arrested for the incident that took place on Wednesday," said police.
