Paraguay throws Brazil out of Copa America 2011

By Biswajeet Panda
La Plata, Jul 18: Whatever Argentina does Brazil can do better. Seems like the new generation of footballers in Brazil have decided to stick to the adage and have thus followed their arch rivals out of the Copa America.

Paraguay dumped title holders Brazil and have now moved into the semi-finals of the tournament.

Nothing went right for Brazil from the beginning as they simply could not capitalise on some desperate Paraguayan defense. Promising youngster Neymar was the first to show signs of nerves as, in the 8th minute he volleyed slimly over after a ball broke to him on the edge of the box.

The tale continued as Brazil rarely displayed their flair and instead seemed too cautious to make an impact. In the face of all that Paraguyan defenders held on to their own and put water into the hopes of the even more desperate Brazillian attackers.

The second half was a pinch better as Brazil appeared a bit more organised, but the flair was still lacking. Neymar again missed another chance as Paraguay held on to their own.

The deadlock continued even as the play extended into the extra time. At the end it all came down to the penalty shootout. And that proved to be the nemesis for Brazil as the players got overpowered by the nerves and missed every single shot at the Paraguayan goal post.

Paraguay, on the other hand were slightly better but still netted twice to win the match 2-0 on penalty shootout. They will now play Venezuela in the semi-final on July 20th in Mendoza.
