Bhopal, Jul 18: One of India's most conservative capitals, Bhopal, has a record of highest number of rape cases in the country as well as exploitation of minors, particularly girls, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said.

Bhopal, with 77 cases, is at the third position after Delhi (258) and Mumbai (85) in the incidents of rape of minor girls. An NCRB report reveals the record of 2009-19, a total of 4,646 cases of criminal nature against children.

The maximum number of 337 cases were reported from Indore, the city which is dubbed as the financial capital of Madhya Pradesh, followed by 257 and 127 cases respectively from Jabalpur and Bhopal. 1071 minor girls were raped in Madhya Pradesh, which is 20 per cent of the total of such incidents that took place in the country in 2009-10.

After Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra come second and third respectively, with 625 and 612 cases reported as far as number of rapes of minor girls is concerned. 115 children were killed in Madhya Pradesh, 363 in Uttar Pradesh, 181 in Maharashtra and 126 in Bihar.

Focusing on this crucial issue, a large number of youth walked 3 km to protest sexual violence against women on Sunday, Jul 17 afternoon. This was India's first 'Slut Walk' or 'besharmi morcha'. "We got 5,000 registrations for the Bhopal walk on Facebook. But parents did not permit many girls to participate because it is called Slut Walk and the Indian name for it is Besharmi Morcha," said Prince Gaba, an organiser.
