Chandigarh, Jul 15: The SAD today (Jul 15) condemned the Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh's appeal to the state government to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court over the contentious Hansi-Butana canal row, a case pending in the Supreme Court.

"The matter of Hansi Butana canal as well as issue of construction of wall along the canal are already under the consideration of the Supreme Court so High Court cannot take up this case," Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said today.

Cheema alleged that Amarinder Singh was trying to mislead the people of Punjab with his statements to save the face of his party's government in Haryana and at the Centre.

"This act of Congress leadership was a clear cut betrayal with the people of Punjab," said Cheema.

About 4-km-long concrete wall is being built by Haryana along the Hansi-Butana canal next to the Ghaggar river in Kaithal district. However, the Punjab fears that the wall may flood its villages.

He said that when the bill regarding termination of water agreements was introduced in Vidhan Sabha the SAD had not only fully supported the bill rather the then leader of opposition Parkash Singh Badal accompanied the Chief Minister, forgetting all the differences and went to the Governor of Punjab to get the bill approved.

Cheema reiterated that SAD-BJP government led by Parkash Singh Badal was sincerely pursuing the case of Hansi Butana canal as well as of the wall being constructed along the canal in the highest court of country.
