UP: Rahul continues march but Mulayam Singh, Azharuddin held

Lucknow, Jul 7: While Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi resumed his third day of padayatra (foot march) in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, Jul 7, two more prominent leaders have been detained for entering the state amid grave tension.

Uttar Pradesh police detained Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin before entering violence-hit Moradabad.

Section 144 has been imposed in Moradabad after villagers started violent protest against police alleged misbehaviour with women.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) was injured when he (DIG) faced an irate mob indulged in incendiarism and brick-batting on Wednesday, Jul 6.

Mulayam Singh accused Mayawati government for "suppressing the voice" of the politicians as Singh and Azharuddin were "illegally" detained.

Meanwhile, police arrested a person, who attended Rahul's padayatra, with loaded revolver. The incident enhanced tension in the state as it imposed threat to Rahul's security.

The foot march of the self-proclaimed messiah of the farmers, Rahul Gandhi will culminate in the Kisan Mahapanchayath in Aligarh.
