Sources informed that Maran was carrying his resignation while moving to Manmohan Singh's residence. The meeting has been scheduled to be held at 3 pm.
Pressure to table his resignation intensified when the CBI implicated Maran in their status report on 2G spectrum scam. On Wednesday, CBI in the Supreme Court claimed that they (CBI) received evidence which unearths Maran's role in the second generation telecom spectrum scam.
Opposition parties like AIADMK, BJP all created pressure on the UPA government to sack Maran from the union cabinet. Maran, the union textile minister, is expected to submit his resignation anytime.
Media sources also claimed that Maran, before entering the cabinet meeting on Thursday, had said to his party members that "all is over" for him (Maran).
Allegations against Maran:
Maran allegedly forced C Sivasankaran, owner of Aircel, to sell the telecom company to Maran's Malaysia-based friend T Ananda Krishnan in 2006. The reports added that Maran, during his tenure as a Communication Minister in UPA I government, issued spectrum licenses to Astro, a sister company of Maxis, soon after it purchased stake in Sun TV, which is owned by Maran's brother Kalanidhi Maran and family.
