Bring Prime Minister under the ambit of Lokpal: CPI

A B Bardhan
Patna, Jul 7: As things stand now there seems to be no consensus among political parties over the subject of bringing the Prime Minister under the ambit of the Lokpal. Congress leaders have made their stance clear on not including the PM's office under the Lokpal's ambit while BJP leaders are still to come out with a clear stand. But in the meanwhile A B Bardhan, the Communist Party of India General Secretary, has come out in the open to state that the Prime Minister must be brought under the purview of the Ombudsman.

The veteran leader was speaking to mediapersons at Patna.

He said, "The government should bring a strong and effective Lokpal Bill and the PM should be under the jurisdiction of the national watchdog on corruption."

Bardhan also advised the government to table to present the Lokpal Bill during the monsoon session Parliament and thus complete all the formalities required to pass the bill in the winter session.

He added that at the moment his party had nothing extra to say and would much rather prefer to present its view in the Parliament when the bill is tabled.

He also slammed the government for convening an all-party meet without with preparing a copy of the bill. He said, "Where is the bill (Lokpal) on which the political parties were asked to give their opinion?" and questioned the need for calling the meet on the issue amid circulation of the two drafts -- one presented by the government's ministers and the other by the members of the Civil Society.
