Djokovic replaced Nadal at the top of the ladder after his Wimbledon semi-final victory against Jo Wilfred Tsonga of France. The 24-year old Serb has had an incredible 2011 where he has won 48 of his 49 matches. His only loss this year has come against Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open.
Speaking of Djokovic's incredible run, Federer said, "He deserves to become No. 1 after an immense start to the year. When you lose so rarely, your confidence carries you a long way."
Djokovic's wimbledon victory didn't surprise the Swiss maestro who said that the Serb becoming world number is good for tennis. He said, "And he's proved before at Wimbledon that he can play on grass. It's good for tennis that it happened."
Federer was the reigning World Number one before being replaced by Rafael Nadal in 2009. During his stay at the top, the Swiss maestro was nothing short of invincible, but ever since then it has been a sort of free-fall for the man who is still regarded as the finest men's tennis player of all time.
As things stand now as per the ATP ranking, Federer is behind Nadal who is at the second position and it's Djokovic who is the Numero Uno in men's tennis.
