Shameful case of molestation on minor surfaces near Puri

Puri, Jul 3: With the entire state of Orissa immersed in festivities for the annual Jagannath Rath yatra in Puri, a disturbing piece of news has emerged from there. A nine year old was molested reportedly by a policeman in a train near Bhubaneswar. The girl from Bengal was traveling to Puri to witness the historical Rath Yatra along with her family.

The policeman was arrested soon after the passengers nabbed him after the girl raised an alarm. The girls' father was also arrested for manhandling the policeman. The shocking incident happened in an AC compartment in the Howrah-Puri-Jagannath express at 3am.

The Puri SP (railway) Bhagyadhar Behera spoke on the incident and said, "He was booked for outraging the modesty of the girl. We produced him in a Khurda court, which remanded him to judicial custody."

On the arrest of the victim's father, the DSP (railway), Pandab Mohanty has been quoted as saying, "He manhandled the inspector, who was assigned to report to duty in Puri during the Rath Yatra." The Railway Police Force (RPF) has raised security to prevent such untoward incidents in the future.

With increasing cases of assault on minors increasing by the day, this news comes as a shocker especially whn it is perpetrated by a law enforcing official.

The Inspector general-cum-chief security commissioner (RPF, east coast railway) Srikant Mishra commented, "I am inquiring into the allegation. All trains, mostly the night trains have been provided with escorts to protect the passengers. We have deployed more than 400 RPF personnel in Puri for the convenience of passengers. CCTV cameras and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service."
