New Delhi, Jul 2: The three member panel comprising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj met on Saturday, Jul 2 to finalise the name of the new Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).

After the meeting on Saturday, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj stated in public that the next CVC has already been finalised without any objection and the government will announce the name soon.

Sources informed that three names were in the tough competition, though media reports earlier emphasised on the names of Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, outgoing Home Secretary G K Pillai, former Chemicals and Fertilizers Secretary Bijoy Chatterjee, former Secretary, Legislative Affairs V K Bhasin, former Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran and present Personnel Secretary Alka Sirohi.

The pressure on the government to name the new CVC intensified after President Pratibha Patil cancelled former CVC PJ Thomas' appointment as Central Vigilance Commissioner in Mar 2011.

The Supreme Court had earlier slammed the CVC appointment (Thomas' appointment) and had ruled that the government had made major lapses in his (Thomas') selection and overlooked his involvement in the Palmolein scam.
