Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily
Kolkata, July 1: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has given a call to fight corruption and the UPA was committed to a strong Lokpal Bill, Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily has said.

"Sonia Gandhi has given a clarion call to fight corruption," Moily told a WBPCC rally here.

"The UPA is committed to a strong Lokpal Bill, he added. Praising the Union Finance Minister, he said I am proud of Pranab Mukherjee for taking leadership in fighting corruption.

Claiming that no party other than the Congress had taken any step against corruption, Moily said the BJP-led NDA government had never thought of working out a Double Taxation treaty with other countries to recover black money.

He said the Centre was coming up with ''comprehensive'' electoral reforms to prevent corrupt leaders and those with criminal records from contesting the elections.

Referring to the arrest of former Telecom minister A Raja, Ahmad said, "our government is accused of encouraging corruption. But ours is the first government that allowed a minister to be arrested."

He said when the then BJP president Bangaru Lakshman was caught on camera taking a bribe during the NDA regime, the party took no action against him, but the journalist who made the expose was jailed.
