Suresh Kalmadi
New Delhi, Jul 2: After media reports on special treatment to Suresh Kalmadi inside Tihar jail brought shame to the jail authorities, a special investigation has been ordered on the matter. Authorities on Saturday, Jul 2 asked the investigating team to submit the report within 48 hours.

According to reports, Kalmadi was found to have biscuits and tea with the Superintendent of jail. Brijesh Kumar Garg, inspecting trail judge on a surprise visit to Tihar found that "high profile under trial prisoners (UTP) were being given undue liberty by the jail authorities."

Garg in a report to judge said he was "surprised to see Kalmadi, who is in judicial custody in connection with the Time-Scoring-Result contract scam, was sitting with jail superintendent Bharadwaj and was enjoying tea/coffee and biscuits/namkeen."

The report also said that during inspection it was found that the prison cells of many charged in "various scams related to CWG, 2G spectrum and Nalco" were kept unlocked.

"During the inspection, it was observed that none of the jail officials was expecting the visit (of the judge) during the summer vacations and all the high profile accused were being given undue liberty by the jail authorities for reasons best known to them," said Garg's report.

The report also showed that the main accused in the Nitish Katara murder case, Vishal Yadav and Vikas Yadav were seen walking leisurely outside.

"Vishal Yadav and Vikas Yadav were roaming around in the garden of the jail, beyond permitted time," said the report adding that the Jail Superintendent was unable to explain the situation.

"It appears that the jail authorities were having two sets of norms, one for the high profile under trial prisoners and convicts and the other for the remaining UTPs and convicts. It appears that the high profile accused and convicts were thoroughly enjoying their stints at the Central Jail Number 4, courtesy the jail officials," said Garg.

The jail Superintendent was exempted from his duty after the incident came into light. "We haven't received the report as yet. But once we get it we will take strict action. The report was about jail no 4 and we are carrying out an inquiry into it. It is very unfortunate. We have asked the Vigilance in-Charge to carry out an inquiry and submit a report within 48 hours," said RN Sharma, Additional Director General, Tihar Jail after an inquiry into the probe was ordered.
