New Delhi, Jul 1: Congress never left any stone unturned to condemn Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for triggering post-Godhra communal riots that left over 1,200 people dead. Now as reports of the destruction of the riots in 2007 have emerged, the Congress has said this is a cover-up operation.

The 2002 Gujarat violence was a retaliatory against Muslims(as they attacked the Sabarmati Express carrying mostly hindu passengers). In this entire violence, nearly 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed and 223 more people were reported missing.

“This is a criminal conspiracy by the state government to ensure that the truth about this massacre/carnage does not come out," party spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

Tewari also questioned Modi"s role and alleged his involvement in the destruction of the documents pertaining to the 'massacre and carnage". “At a time when the investigation is going on, the disappearance or destruction of the documents clearly points out that the state government was involved in the cover-up," he added.

Congress has demanded an independent inquiry under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Gujarat Congress chief Arjun Modhvadia said, “The records were destroyed to hide the truth regarding the involvement of Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues."
