Maneka Gandhi: Cong is shameless, has become a habitual liar
Reacting to the affidavit filed by Delhi Police in the Supreme Court to explain its action against Baba Ramdev and his supporters, she said, "Congress is shameless and has become a habitual liar," before adding that crores of people watched the incident on news channels.
She added, "Baba Ramdev staged satyagraha after taking due permission. There could be nothing more shameless than the government using lathis on saints and seers." Ripping into the Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh's comment over the incident, she said, "It seems that he has become voice of some other person and this should be probed throughly."
It can be recalled that Delhi Police, in a midnight swoop on Baba Ramdev's fast at the Ramlila Maidan, beat up his supporters and abruptly put an end to the protest. Baba Ramdev, who was protesting against corruption and was demanding the bringing back of black money, fled in a woman's garb and later broke fast after being hospitalised.
Following the death of his husband, Sanajay Gandhi, Maneka, moved out of the Gandhi-Nehru family after a much publicised feud with her mother-in-law and former prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Ever since then, she alongwith her son have maintained a distance from the other members of family, namely Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. While the latter trio, after much reluctance, took over the reigns of Congress party, Maneka and her son Varun Gandhi, have joined BJP.
It now becomes interesting to see how the Congress in general and Digvijay Singh in particular react to the statement. It can be recollected that Sanjay Gandhi, was touted to be the heir to Indira Gandhi's political legacy, before an unfortunate air-crash cut short his eventful life.
