DMK on tenterhooks as Jayalalithaa embarks on Delhi tour
Co-incidentally or significantly, her arrival in New Delhi coincides with the hearing of Kanimozhi's bail plea in the Supreme Court. Kanimozhi, a DMK MP and also the daughter of the party patriarch M Karunanidhi, has been in the Tihar jail for her alleged involvement in the 2G Scam.
Kanimozhi's arrest is the bone of contention between Congress and the DMK and has often been attributed for the deteriorating relations between the two parties.
Jayalalithaa, during the course of her visit is expected to meet the Prime Minister to discuss the issue of Lankan Tamils amongst others. However, there is no clarification yet, if she will visit Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
It can be recalled that Jayalalithaa was congratulated by Sonia Gandhi, after her victory in the just concluded Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The Congress President had also invited her to tea.
With DMK-Congress ties hitting the abyss over the poll debacle in Tamil Nadu and the arrest of Kanimozhi by CBI, Jaya's visit is politically significant. While DMK has been bullying Congress since the early days of their partnership, the tables have now turned. DMK now needs the Congress desperately to remain in power, at least at the centre and ward off damages after names of several party leaders has come out in various corruption scandals.
