With South Indian food making its way into the jail's kitchens, the jail number one, six and four now serve both South Indian and North Indian delicacies. The new menu made by trained cooks has South Indian dosas, idlis and uttampams, sambar being served to their jail inmates.
According to jail sources, the menu in the jail number one changed after ex telecom minister, A Raja, the prime accused in the 2G scam was arrested in Feb.
The menu in jail number 6 changed when the female inmates of the jail were taught to cook south indian food after DMK, MP Kanimozhi, the daughter of M Karunananidhi was arrested on the charges of allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 200 crore in the 2G spectrum scam.
It was the same case when Kalaignar TV MD, Sharad Kumar was lodged in the jail number four for his role in the country's biggest corruption scandal.
The inmates in Tihar jail are served three meal a day which includes rice, dal, chappatis and a vegetable dish. Earlier the canteen used to serve puri sabzi, chole bhaturay, samosas, sandwiches, tea and namkeen.
According to sources, Special Police"s cook, DSP, Tamil Nadu had trained the inmates of the jail who were the canteen in charge as well.
The new menu is a big hit in the jail and is being favoured by other inmates also. Inmates get about Rs 1,000 per visit sufficient to buy coupons for investing in the canteen food.
