The micro-blogging website Twitter introduced the automatic shorten service to hammer the links to maximum 19 characters. Twitter's link shortening service will use t.co along with the composed tweet. Any how, those who want to use third party link shorteners like bitly.com or Google Shortener, Twitter allows it.
"Just paste a link of any length into the Tweet box on Twitter.com. After you"ve composed your Tweet and you hit the “Tweet" button, we"ll shorten the link so that it only takes up 19 characters," Twitter said in its blog.
The link-shortening feature will also increase security. If you click on a link that has been reported as malicious, Twitter will redirect you to a warning page. Moreover, Twitter will show a shortened version of the original link, people will know which site the link points to.
Twitter added it automatic shortener service a few days after it rolled out the Follow Button, which allows users to follow accounts directly from any website. By clicking the 'Follow' button, users can follow the site or get the updates from the website's Twitter account.
These new services will give extra energy to Twitter, which has been facing intense competition from Facebook. Twitter's new alliance with Apple for the iOS 5 devices will also help it to gain more followers. So, Happy Tweeting!
