New Delhi, May 30: Ex-youth congress president M S Bitta lashed both the BJP and the Congress for politicising the issue of capital punishment to death row convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar on Sunday, May 29.

Bitta, who was attacked by Bhullar, charged both BJP and Congress for politicising the terror issue. He said they were wary of losing the Sikh votes if they go ahead with the death penalty of Bhullar.

“They are afraid of hanging Afzal Guru due to the fear of losing Muslim votes, Devinder Singh Bhullar for losing Sikh votes and Dara Singh for annoying the Hindus",Bitta said.

On Wednesday, May 25, President Pratibha Patil, had rejected Bhullar's mercy petition.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), while seeking mercy for Bhullar, took the angle that it was an “emotive issue for the Sikh community" and would go a long way to serve the national interest, which said “An act of grace, which will ensure that the atmosphere of acrimony, suspicion and estrangement between the Sikhs and the Centre is not vitiated any further."

Bitta was annoyed especially with the Congress as he was left alone to fight the war against terror.
