Karunanidhi blackmailed Sonia; DMK 'drama' exposed?
DMK and Congress have already emerged in a fuss over their alliance. The distance between the two parties in UPA alliance seems to have widened after the massive defeat in the recent assembly polls 2011 in Tamil Nadu. Amid this tensed situation, the whistle-blower published some documents which shows the opinion expressed by DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran.
Maran in 2008 reportedly told an officer of the US Consulate General that the then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi tried to save his sinking ship in the state and threat to table his resignation was a "drama" to "blackmail" Congress President Sonia Gandhi over the Sri Lankan Tamil issues.
"Karunanidhi's DMK and Congress are bound together by mutual self-interest. Karunanidhi needs Congress to remain Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and Congress relies on the DMK to keep the UPA in power in New Delhi. As a result, it is no surprise that the political drama Karunanidhi generated quietly concluded with no resignations after the Indian government took sufficient steps to give him enough political cover to save face…Support for the Sri Lankan Tamils has not become a burning issue with the public in Tamil Nadu…The legacy of revulsion over Rajiv Gandhi's assassination continues to loom large over Tamil Nadu," the whistle-blower posted on its site.
The cable also showed how Maran criticised Karunanidhi and his party over corruption. Maran reportedly predicted DMK's downfall in 2008. "The problem when you come to power by promising people free TVs, is that people soon forget the TVs you gave them and then ask 'what are you doing for me now?'" Maran reportedly told the US cable in 2008.
