Chennai, May 15: The verdict is out and the results have been pronounced in the biggest democratic exercise in India, the Elections. With many upsets, and a couple of surprise victories, the distinction for the biggest let down will have to go to the DMK in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2011. After the disappointing performance of the DMK in Tamil Nadu, the party workers and leaders are engaging in retrospection to ascertain the reason for the debacle.

But there are only two words that will emerge when one is discussing the dismal DMK performance and that is 2G. It comes as no surprise that the spectrum scam was the biggest blow and reason for DMKs defeat as was revealed in the meeting of DMK leaders, MLA's and its Chief Karunanidhi at the Kaliagnar's Gopalapuram residence.

A DMK MLA was quoted as saying, “Thalaivar (leader) is very upset over the results. He didn't expect this kind of a defeat. He asked us for the reasons for the massive defeat." For a party that ruled Tamil Nadu and scrapping through in this elections with a mere 22 of the 119 seats is damaging. Out of the 28 ministers who contested the elections, 17 of them lost which raised quite a few eyebrows. This has led to voices against Raja and Kanimozhi resonating within the party.

There was some dissenting voices pre-elections after the 2G scam came to light and with the DMK's involvement in it. While Karunanidhi earlier maintained that Raja was innocent and batted for his daughter's Kanimozhi's non-involvement in the case, he was proved wrong after she was charge-sheeted and Raja languishing in Tihar at the moment. DMK Chief's son MK Alagiri and MK Stalin had urged their father not to put the party's goodwill at stake for Raja.

With the prevailing tension within the family after Kanimozhi and Dayalu Ammal named in the charge sheet, it would be interesting to see the change in family dynamics. With Kanimozhi's bail plea deferred till the 20th of May, her political future does not look so bright. AIADMK's Chief and would-be Chief Minister Jayalalithaa also rubbed in the fact that her victory was a result of the massive corruption in the DMK camp (read the 2G scam).

With Karunanidhi not coming out with a statement on his massive loss, the only reaction that was out was that the people of Tamil Nadu has decided to “give him rest".
