Satya Sai Baba
Bangalore, Apr 26: While the world is mourning the death of the spiritual guru Satya Sai Baba, there are certain others who seem to be concerned with the material wealth of the saint. The Satya Sai Central Trust that is estimated to be worth Rs 40,000 crore is one booty everybody wants a piece of. But unofficial estimates account Rs 1.3 lakh crore as the trust's worth.

With no clarity on succession plans, the inner core within the Prashanthi Nilayam is abuzz with rumours on what will happen to the trust, and who the likely candidate will be holding the rein of power. According to newspaper reports emerging, a large amount of gold and jewellery have been shifted from the Prashanthi Nilayam to an unknown place in Bangalore.

With the speculations being strong enough, the Director General and Inspector General of police (Andhra Pradesh), Aravinda Rao commented on the authenticity of the rumours and stated, “Normally we don't check contents of vehicles departing from Prashanthi Nilayam, since they all have permits. We have also heard of reports about the alleged shifting gold from Puttaparthi, and we are probing into it."

Sources within intelligence agencies have confirmed that customs officials had seized two briefcases at the Devanahalli Airport in Bangalore that contained precious jewels. They were apparently allowed to go through since they had valid documents. “Two persons from Puttaparthi were carrying it, and the police checked the papers before letting them go." the source added.

There was much confusion over the lack of proper accounting of the various donations that the trust received and the money spent. It has to be noted that Sai Baba received considerable donations in the form of jewelery while the rest as cash, demand drafts and cheques.

An source within the Prashanthi Nilayam has been quoted as saying to a newspaper, “Taking advantage of the confusion and chaos that the place is mired in, the gold has been transported unlawfully. The matter should be thoroughly investigated."

There were reports in certain sections of the media about the circumstances that led to the death of Sai Baba as well.
