Casualties over West Bengal assembly poll; 2 die on duty

Kolkata, Apr 19: Two poll officers died when they were on duty in Jalpaiguri district on Monday, Apr 18. Pramod Roy and Maneswar Roy, a school teacher and an inspector with the food and supplies department respectively were appointed as the poll officers.

While the former suffered a heart attack at the time of submitting voting materials after the poll, the latter complained of chest pain at the time of polling, Gupta said. He said the EC office would pay an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of the two.

The voter turnout touched 83.75 percent in the first phase held in all the six districts of north Bengal. However, sources informed that a re-poll is expected in a booth in Karandighi in North Dinajpur district.

Meanwhile, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee claimed that the state people will help her party to root out CPI(M) which has reined West Bengal fore last 34 years.

"CPI(M) is going to be ousted from power in West Bengal this time. The Left Front will not even get ten of the 54 seats in North Bengal," stated Mamata on Tuesday, Apr 19.
