Panchayat poll: Woman candidate shot dead in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 16: Security was beefed up in Jammu Kashmir as the state held its first phase of panchayat election after a long gap of ten years. Despite all securities, a woman candidate - Hasina Begum has been shot dead.

40-year-old Hasina Begum's murder is believed to be the first political killing since the panchayat poll has been kicked off in the state on Apr 13.

Begum, a Panch candidate for the polls to be held on April 21, was rushed to the District Hospital Pulwama where she succumbed to injuries. Begum was affiliated with Opposition People Democratic Party.

Election Commission has asked police to provide special securities to all election candidates. The panchayat election will be held in 16 phases in the entire state.
