New Delhi, Apr 14: After the World Cup win, it is no longer a secret that Cricketers are praised like gods in India. They were bestowed with awards and cash-prizes. However, the apathy towards other sportsperson in the country, was again on display. A national-level athlete, who lost her leg, was only announced Rs 25,000 as compensation.

23-year-old Sonu Sinha, alias Arunima Sinha, a national-level volleyball and football player was pushed out of a running train in Uttar Pradesh by three men who were trying to rob her on Wednesday, Apr 13. She lost her leg and the attackers are still absconding. (Video: State footballer attacked, loses leg)

Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken stated, "We have decided to give her a compensation of Rs 25,000 immediately. If she requires more we'll provide her with it. I have asked the Railway Ministry to look into the incident and seek a report from the Railway Police."

"I have also spoken to the Home Ministry because she was going for a job interview with the CISF. I have asked them if they can still give her a job. I don't want to make this a UP Police vs Railway Police incident, but yes the UP Police are equally to be blamed," he added.

However, in comparison with the rewards to the players of the Indian cricket team, the compensation to Sonu looks too little. Delhi government announced Rs 2 crore to Indian skipper MS Dhoni and Rs 1 crore each to Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and other Delhi cricket players. The list continues with the announcement of Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat state governments' rewards to the players. (Read: Team India in for some big gifts)

Now the question that has been raised again nation-wide is if the Rs 25,000 is enough to compensate Sonu's loss? Is not it the right time for the government to prove that other sportsmen beside cricketers also have their importance in the country?
