Carl Lewis forays into US politics

New Jersey, April 12: Carl Lewis, the Olympic superstar has made his foray into US politics by announcing his candidature for the New Jersey state senate. He will be contesting as a Democrat against the Republican incumbent Dawn Addiego in a Republican dominated area about 25 miles to the east of Philadelphia.

A nine-time Olympic gold medallist, Carl Lewis told a press conference, "When I run - you can see my record - I run to win." Lewis won gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump and sprint relay.

He added, "My focus will be on children, on the future...We cannot rest until we make sure that our families can afford to live and raise their kids here, that our seniors can remain in their homes and afford their health and pharmaceutical costs."

Considered as one of the best track and field athletes, Lewis quoted his late father, "Do what you think is right. Follow your head."
