Cricket/Election: Dhoni likely to take Ganguly's place,again

Kolkata, Apr 5: Mahendra Singh Dhoni had already replaced Sourav Ganguly as one of the successful Indian Cricket skipper. Now it seems that history is going to be repeated once again. This time Dhoni is likely to take over Ganguly's responsibilities not in the Cricket field but in the election field.

Ganguly, who was selected as the brand ambassador for election commission in West Bengal, expressed his desire to withdraw from the post. Ganguly's decision came after Trinamool Congress showed protest against Sourav as EC brand ambassador.

Trinamool Congress filed a complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer alleging that the youth icon Sourav Ganguly was a Left supporter. TMC demanded EC to remove Ganguly from the campaign programmes.

However, rejecting Trinamool Congress' demand to snub Sourav Ganguly from Election Commission's publicity campaigns ahead of 2011 Assembly polls, the office of Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal said that former Indian cricket captain can be appointed as the brand ambassador for the EC.

Meanwhile, citing the row, the former Indian Cricket skipper came forward with his request to dismiss his appointment as EC ambassador.

"Sourav has written to the Election Commission seeking relief from the promo, and the commission giving respect to his emotions and sentiment, has decided not to carry the advertisement," DG (Information, Education and Communication) of the West Bengal Election Commission Akshay Routh.

Routh also informed, "We have decided to withdraw Sourav only to give respect to Sourav's emotions. We can use him for a different purpose."

However, Routh also informed that after Team India's victory in the recent world cup and Dhoni's extra-ordinary performance in the final, the EC has also decided to use the services of Dhoni and former president A P J Abdul.

Dhoni and Kalam were used as the EC brand ambassador during Jharkhand and Bihar assembly election. So, it will be interesting to see whether Dhoni will take over Ganguly's place outside the Cricket field.
