Land of Kama Sutra to block adult .xxx websites
Responding to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) approval for .xxx suffix for pornography websites, an Indian official said that the government may block the whole domain. Government plans to impose the ban on xxx websites citing to the Indian Penal Code that considers the distribution of adult content as illegal.
The IT ministry has released a statement describing that India joins with other Middle East and Islamic countries in blocking the newly proposed .xxx domain. The statement said that the contents in this domain is against the IT Act and Indian laws.
India along with many other countries from the Middle East and Indonesia opposed the grant of the domain in the first place, and we would proceed to block the whole domain, as it goes against the IT Act and Indian laws," said a senior official at the ministry of IT.
Some experts in the internet field opinionated that government ban cannot control the expansion of these types adult sites as many of them already have their presence in '.com' and '.in' domains. Also, the government's barricade can be easily challenged in court.
Even though India and some other countries plans to block the .xxx domain, Western countries including USA and UK set to begin the launch of this adult domain. ICANN approved .xxx domain on mar 18 and it will be available in the second quarter of 2011.
