Dawood Ibrahim plans to hijack 2G probe; attack on cards?

New Delhi, Mar 23: From what looks like a page out of a potboiler, the 2G scam seem to be looking like a well-scripted movie that has all the right ingredients in the right amounts. With money, overseas links, murder in the scheme of things, the latest entry is the involvement of the underworld. Recent reports have emerged that security has been heightened at the CBI headquarters following information that dreaded Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim might carry out an attack.

Reports revealed that the CBI got the information a few days back that Dawood's D-Company was planning to strike the headquarters to destroy vital evidence in the possession of the CBI related to the 2G spectrum controversy.

A CBI source who did not wish to be named was quoted as saying to a popular newspaper, “A source in Mumbai passed on information to our officials a few days ago that D-Company is planning to target the CBI headquarters with the intention to destroy the 2G probe papers. We have taken all the required precautions. An alert has been sounded out at all the agency offices. The investigation team has been asked to be careful."

Though the involvement of the underworld has not been established in the 2G scam ever, the recent news will lead the CBI to investigate the scam under new light. Investigative agencies were probing the role of the underworld in its dealings with Shahid Usman Balwa, who is the promoter of Swan Telecom that sold a major stake to Etisalat DB. Balwa is presently under arrest and is under judicial custody along with the A Raja, the alleged kingpin of the scam.

The report also said that the underworld link could only be established through Shahid Balwa.
