Giant-killer Somdev shows Baghdatis the door

By Biswajeet Panda
Indian Wells, Mar 13: It was a night that Indian Tennis star Somdev Devvarman will remember for ages. Everything he tried fell into place and by the end he secured an improbable victory over World No.19 Marcus Baghdatis. And what more is that he did it in straight sets.

Devvarman pulled off this victory, probably the biggest of his career so far, at the BNP Paribas tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California. He saw of Baghdatis in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.

Having already beaten Adrian Mannarino 6-2 6-3 in the first round of the tournament, he is now set to take on the winner of Joe Wilfred Tsonga and Xavier Mallise in the third round.

Devvarman, who qualified for the main draw alongwith compatriot Rohan Bopanna, converted five of the eight breakpoints he had as opposed to Baghdatis' one of the three. He took the first set 7-5 and won the second one 6-0 courtesy some magnificent ground strokes.

Such was the dominance of Somdev's game that Baghdatis could neither serve convincingly nor return with ease.

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, the toup four of Men's tennis are playing in the tournament.
