Massive explosion in Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan

Tokyo, Mar 12: A powerful explosion has occurred in the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. The plant had undergone damages following the deadly earthquake that struck Japan a day back. A massive tsunami also occurred yesterday causing major damages to life and property.

Witnesses are revealing that a huge explosion have occurred in the plant and many have been injured as a result. Smoke bellowed out of Tokyo Electric Power Co's (TEPCO) Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, confirmed Jiji news agency.

Company sources have revealed that several workers have been injured.

Japan's Nuclear Safety Agency has reveled that the explosion was not of the reactors, but occurred in the plant. Reports suggest that the outer wall of the building holding the first reactor was blown off in the impact.

The BBC has reported that radioactive levels have risen 20 folds outside the plant.

Earlier reports had emerged of glitches in the cooling of radioactive materials that will have dire consequences was reported in both the Fukushima and the Ichiro Fujisaki plant. The local news agency, Kyodo reported that four coolant units of the Fukushima Daini plant had failed. The plant was listed in the nuclear emergency list with clear indications that the coolant system was not working.
