Women protest against poor civic amenities

Jamshedpur, Mar 8: On the International Women's Day today (Mar 8), hundreds of women staged demonstration in front of Jamshedpur block office here to protest against the prevailing acute water and power crisis in parts of the steel city.

Led by the Jharkhand state unit vice-president of Janata Dal (united)'s women cell, Alpana Bose, the women activists of the party and locals staged demonstration demanding immediate arrangement to ensure adequate water and electricity supply in Parsudih, Karandih, Bagbera, Matladih, Govindpur, Chotagovindpur etc.

Slogan shouting women claimed that they were forced to stage the demonstration on Women's Day as their repeated plea to improve the water and electricity problem fell on deaf ears.

Bose said the residents of these localities were facing immense difficulties as majority of the boring wells, ponds dried up but no steps were by the district administration to repair faulty boring wells.

The situation was turning bad to worse with the approaching summer as the power supply in these areas continues to be erratic, she alleged.

Bose also demanded that the district administration did not initiate any measure to provide electricity connection to people living below poverty line even though there was a provision to supply electricity on cheap rate.

She warned that the JD(U), an ally in the Arjun Munda-led coalition government, would launch a hunger strike in front of the office of the East Singhbhum district deputy commissioner, if their demands were not looked into in a week's time.
