Slumdog Millionaire actor loses home in slum fire

Mumbai, Mar 5: Garib Nagar - a slum area adjoins the Bandra (east) railway station in Mumbai was completely gutted out after a major fire broke out at the area on Friday, Mar 4. Sources reported that more than 11 people are severely injured.

Danny Boyle's 2008 Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire's child actor Rubina has also reportedly lost her house. However, her family members escaped the area safely, sources said.

26 fire engines and 16 jumbo water tankers were rushed to the spot after the fire broke out at the slum area at around 8:40 pm. No casualties have been reported yet but eyewitnesses claimed of heavy property damage.

Fire brigade sources informed that the blaze was occurred from the Garibnagar area in Bandra East. Train services were also affected mainly at the Bandra east, though Western lines were running smoothly.

The exact cause of the major fire is yet to ascertain but gas cylinders exploding in the slum could have been a possibility, several media reports suggested.

Sources informed that the locality is slated for redevelopment. A large number of slum-dwellers were believed to be have been trapped in the blaze.
