Mumbai, Feb 27 (PTI) In a hit and run case, daughter of aCustoms'' official was today crushed to death by a speedingdumper in central Mumbai, police said.
The accused Hanumant Sahapure (40) who was driving thedumper tried to escape but a traffic policeman who saw theincident chased the vehicle and stopped it, police said addingthe driver has been arrested.
According to police, Bavisa Ahire(17), a class XIstudent of Ruparel college, was crossing the Matunga road totake a local train.
"Bavisa, elder daughter of a Customs official, was onthe way to her residence at Wadala this morning when themishap occurred. The speeding dumper crushed her, resulting inher death on the spot," B Ghadigaonkar, Sub Inspector atShivaji Park Police Station told PTI adding the body was takento nearby civic run Sion hospital for post mortem.
Soon after the mishap, Sahapure tried to escape but invain, he said.
"Sahapure accelerated his dumper but a traffic policesaw the mishap and chased the dumber on his bike. The accusedfeared that he would be beaten up by the locals and thought ofrunning away. His vehicle was stopped 100 yards away from thespot of incident," the officer added.
"The driver did not appear to be drunk," Ghadigaonkarsaid adding further probe was on.
