Case registered against Maoists in abduction case

Malkangiri (Orissa), Feb 27 (PTI) A case has beenregistered against several Maoist leaders in connection withthe February 16 abduction of Malkangiri district collector K VKrishna and a junior engineer, police said today.

The Officer-in-charge of Pepermetla police stationPremchand Bag had suo motu filed the case a day after theincident at Chitrakonda police station, MalkangiriSub-divisional police officer Umashanker Das said.

The case was registered against Maoist leaders Prasad,Anand Rao, Chenti and others under various sections of IPC andthe Arms Act which included abduction and other activities,police said.

"Police had registered the case suo motu and necessarysteps would be taken in due course," they said.

Collector R Vineet Krishna and JE Pabitra Mohan Majhiwere abducted by the Maoists on February 16 from Pepermetlawhen the senior government official was going to Badapada tohold a "Jansampark Sibir" (public awareness camp).

The collector was released by the Maoists afterremaining in captivity for nine days on February 24, followinghectic parleys between the state government and Maoist-chosenmediators.

The JE was released on February 22.
