Women's empowerment does not 'fly' in India

New Delhi, Feb 26: Women are breaking the glass ceiling and are reaching for the stars, however, there are some people among us who do not think that Indian women can lead from the front in taking India to the next century. There was high drama when a Mumbai-bound flight was delayed due to fog. Nothing unnatural in that. But it was delayed further when a passenger found that the pilot of the plane was a woman!

In a preposterous case that defies all sensibilities, a drama unfolded at the Delhi airport on Friday. The Indigo flight 6E 179 was delayed by almost one-and-a-half hours. The flight was supposed to take off at 8:10 am but was still in the airport tarmac till 9:40 am. Partha Guha, a passenger in the flight said, “First, the flight was held up due to a slight fog. Then, just when we were about to fly, the doors were opened again at around 9am as a middle-aged man seated a couple of seats away from me objected to a woman piloting the plane."

The man created a commotion in the flight after the in-flight announcement gave the details of the crew of the particular flight. He outright refused to fly in an aircraft piloted by a woman. The ground crew had to be summoned to take charge of the situation. The man finally agreed after being made clear that he would be evicted along with bag and baggage.
