Bangalore, Feb 25 (PTI) A tight security clampdown willbe in place in and around the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to providefoolproof security to players and fans during the high-profileIndia-England World Cup match here on Sunday, the city policechief said today.
Police commissioner Shankar Bidari said about 3,000policemen will beef up security in and around the stadium,especially after yesterday''s violence when fans desperatelyscrambled for tickets.
"We are deploying about 3,000 policemen, including 700traffic police in and around the stadium to ensure foolproofsecurity for the match on Sunday," Bidari told a pressconference.
"Special security will be provided for hundreds ofEnglish fans expected to arrive in the city to watch thematch. Keeping in view the global threat perception, we aretaking all precautions, including intelligence gathering toprevent undesirable elements entering the stadium," saidBidari.
The spectators will not be allowed to carry any items,including bags, cameras, laptops and water bottles into thestadium.
"Karnataka State Cricket Association is making allarrangements, including a supply of drinking water at thestadium for fans," he said.
Police lathi-charged fans after thousands had queued upoutside the M Chinnaswamy stadium in a mad rush for just 7,000tickets sold for the public.
Bidari regretted that police had to step in to controlthe crowd and restore order as the situation was becomingtense.
"It was unfortunate that police had to use force tocontrol the situation," he said.
He appealed to the fans to reach the stadium in time forthe day-night match.
"I appeal to all spectators to maintain discipline, orderand peace to enjoy the match." PTI PDS AH
