Jamshedpur, Feb 24 (PTI) In a day of upsets, star archersJayanta Talukdar, Tarundeep Rai and Jhanu Hansda crashed outof their respective archery events as Deepika Kumari was theonly big name surviving in the 34th National Games here today.
The second day of the competition today witnessed majorupsets as the CWG team bronze medallists Talukdar, MangalSingh Champia and Tarundeep were among hosts of internationalrepute men and women archers who were eliminated in eitherpre-quarter or quarter-final stage played here today.
Talukdar, 2009 FITA world cup (stage II) gold medallist,moved into the semifinal after defeating Beyant Singh 4-0 butcrashed out of the competiton following defeat againstteammate Pawan Xalxo in the individual recurve event.
Talukdar put up good contest against Xalxo but missed thetarget when it mattered most in the best of five sets.
Xalxo did not last long either as M R Tirkey trounced him3-1. Tirkey will now take on SSCB''s Internation Vishwas, whodefeated Sanjay Boro (Assam) in the other semifinal.
Boro and Xalxo will fight for bronze.
Another major upset in the men�s recurve individual eventwas elimination of Tarundeep (SSCB) in the quarter-finals. Helost to Sanjay Boro (Assam), who eventually lost to Vishwas.
Champia, Atanu Das and Kapil (UP) also lost theirrespective matches. While Champia lost to Priyank (UP), Dasbit the dust against his former Tata Archery Academy mateAdonda Raju (WB).
Kapil went down to Thupuvoyi Swiro (Nagaland) in thequarter-finals.
The golden girl of host team, Deepika defeated SouthAsian games gold medalist Biruli 3-1 in the quarter-final andthen beat Laxmi Rani Majhi, a gold medalist of 4th Asian GrandPrix at Kolkata in 2009, in the semi-final 3-0.
The scenario in the men and women''s compound events wasnothing different as majority of the star archers lost theirrespective matches.
In the women''s individual compound event, CWG team bronzemedalists team Jhanu Handa, Bheigyabati Chanu (Jharkhand) andGagandeep Kaur lost their respective matches against SunitaRani (Punjab), Rupinder Kaur (Punjab) and Namita Yadav(Jharkhand) in the quarter-final stage respectively.
Sunita defeated Yadav in the semi-final while Rupinderlost to V Jyothi Surekha (AP).
The men�s individual compound event also witnessed upsetswhen C. Srither (SSCB), a individual bronze medalist in theCWG, lost to Abhishek Verma of Delhi 0-3 in the semi-finals.
Besides Srither, International archers KH. Ratan Singh(Manipur), Jharkhand''s Paltan Hansda, who had won gold in 2ndAsian grand Prix at Bangkok in 2010, lost their respectivematches.
International Ritul Chatterjee (AP), who defeated NandKishor Rawat 3-1 in the best of five semi-final, will now meetAbhishek Verma (Delhi) in final.
