Right-wing Hindu outfits stall staging of ''Ghalin Lotangan�

Panaji, Feb 22 (PTI) Objections by right wing Hinduorganisations here have forced Goa government to curtail theweek-long celebrations to mark anniversary of Maratha warriorChhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the state.

State Information and Publicity Department said they hadto cancel shows of the play ''Ghalin Lotangan� presented byMaharashtra-based theatre group due to the objections.

The show which was planned at Curchorem town wascancelled after local Congress legislator Sham Satardekar toldthe organisers that he has received objections from twoorganisations � Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti.

Satardekar told PTI that he asked Chief Minister tointervene and cancel the play after people claimed it asdenigrating Hindu deities.

The play was a part of week-long celebrations planned byinformation and publicity department to commemorate birthanniversary of the Maratha king.

Information and Publicity director Menino Peres said therequest to cancel the play was made by Satardekar.

He clarified that the play was cancelled as "some peoplefelt it as defaming Hindu religion and deities."

Peres said the play was selected as a part ofcelebrations because it had a strong message for the society.
