Tripoli, Feb 22 (ANI): Members of Libya's mission to the United Nations have slammed Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi and his regime for carrying out a "genocide" against the citizens of the country, and even went to the extent of calling for his resignation "as soon as possible."

Addressing a press conference along with other personnel from the Libyan Mission to the United Nations in New York, Libya's Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Dabbashi, denounced Qaddafi.

"We are sure that what is going on now in Libya is crimes against humanity and crimes of war. We find it is impossible to stay silent and we have to transfer the voice of the Libyan people to the world," The New York Times quoted Dabbashi, as saying.

As he spoke against the Libyan leader, nearly a dozen of 'tense looking' colleagues of Dabbashi stood behind him.

"We state clearly that the Libyan mission is a mission for the Libyan people. It is not for the regime. The regime of Qaddafi has already started the genocide against the Libyan people," Dabbashi said.

Insisting that Qaddafi has recruited armed forces from unidentified African countries to crush the uprising, he said: "We warn all African countries who are sending their soldiers to fight, to fight with Qaddafi, that they will not see their soldiers coming back."

Dabbashi called upon Colonel Qaddafi to step down and leave the country "as soon as possible."

He further urged the United Nations create a "no fly zone" to prevent foreigners from entering Libya, but called upon the governments of neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia to allow medical supplies through the borders, the paper said. (ANI)
