Chicago, Feb 21: The youngest winner in the 53-year history of NASCAR's premier event, 20-year-old Trevor Bayne, brought victory for the Wood Brothers team. Bayne won the title of Daytona 500, which was organised at Daytona Beach on Sunday (Feb 20).
The once famous team, Wood Brothers, had not won a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race since 2001. Bayne staged one of the biggest upsets in Daytona 500 history by winning in his second NASCAR Sprint Cup start. The last Sprint Cup win for the Wood Brothers was with Elliott Sadler at Bristol on Mar 25, 2001.
After his historic win, Bayne stated, "I never expected to be sitting here. I can't thank these guys enough. It's incredible. This will be the best birthday celebration I've ever had."
Winning the Great American Race in a No 21 Ford, Bayne presented the Wood Brothers' team its fifth Daytona 500 victory - its first since 1976 with David Pearson.
