The once famous team, Wood Brothers, had not won a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race since 2001. Bayne staged one of the biggest upsets in Daytona 500 history by winning in his second NASCAR Sprint Cup start. The last Sprint Cup win for the Wood Brothers was with Elliott Sadler at Bristol on Mar 25, 2001.
After his historic win, Bayne stated, "I never expected to be sitting here. I can't thank these guys enough. It's incredible. This will be the best birthday celebration I've ever had."
Winning the Great American Race in a No 21 Ford, Bayne presented the Wood Brothers' team its fifth Daytona 500 victory – its first since 1976 with David Pearson.
